Mokuhanga Project Space is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Walla Walla, Washington, created to promote and support mokuhanga by exploring new dimensions of the art form in a global context. Your donations help support…

  • Residencies

Mokuhanga Project Space aims to preserve and expand the rich tradition of Ukiyo-e, the revered art form of Japan's Edo Period. Today, mokuhanga has evolved into an international movement, emerging as a contemporary art form that resonates with environmental concerns through its use of water-based pigments and environmentally conscious materials. Since 2023, MPS has shifted focus to providing two residencies per year. While there are many introductory workshops around the world, there are very few opportunities for artists to come together and explore more complex and meaningful uses of mokuhanga. Our organization plays a vital role in the movement, drawing artists to Walla Walla and serving as a hub for innovation. As the first mokuhanga-specific residency in the U.S., MPS has already received great response from the global community. Acting as a global hub has given us the opportunity to enrich the local community in many ways. Your funding helps make all of this possible.

  • Community Workshops

These workshops give local residents, including many educators, students, children, and artists, a chance to learn new skills while deepening their understanding of how art can address complex concerns, often environmental issues. They are lead by professional artists, brought in from around the world, and are often in conjunction with exhibitions. This connection between the local community and artists helps foster a cultural exchange that is both educational and inspiring.

  • Exhibitions

The exhibitions we have held and are planning include works from artists around the globe. They have focused on a range of topics, from the advancement of mokuhanga as an artform to environmental concerns surrounding water. Through these programs, we engage hundreds of people directly each year, with hundreds more visiting our exhibitions.
